Whats Catholicisms stance on animals having souls?

Animals have souls, at least mammals do. I can tell... I haven't been able to be with a bird or reptile for a long time, but from what I can tell... they don't. I don't want to be speciesist( i know it IS a word) but I have never felt anything from them. I know mammals have the ability to love and to feel sadness and I believe that is what makes a soul.
