BFP! What happens next?

I got my BFP this afternoon (yay) and have made an appointment with my GP, but it's not until next Wednesday so I have a week to wait! In the meantime can you tell me what the doc will do? I know that it will be a confirmation of the pregnancy but how do they do this? And do I have to wait for results or does she tell me straight away?
