For a progressive Christian that believes in human evolution, how does the Adam and Eve story fit into that?

I believe that the Aam and Eve story has a great teaching in it, but also believe that humans evolved over millions of years and gradually became separated from the creatures around them with the discovery of tools and fire, etc. Does this make me less of a Christian because I see some of the Bible as symbolic truth rather than literal truth? What do you think?
